Yki Nummi was one of the most significant Scandinavian lighting designers of the 1950s–1970s. He was a versatile and gifted artist and designer who created a wide range of everyday household items.

After the war, Nummi studied mathematics and physics at university. In addition, he completed a degree in decorative painting at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1950. Based on his education, he had a strong theoretical understanding of light and the relationship between light and color.

Nummi worked as a lighting designer from 1950 to 1975 at the Stockmann-Orno factory, where he designed hundreds of luminaires. His best-known designs worldwide include the Modern Art table lamp (1955), which was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York for its collection in 1957, and the Lokki pendant lamp from 1960.

In addition to lighting and luminaire design, Nummi was a highly respected color expert. He was responsible for the color schemes of several major public buildings, churches, and residential areas in Finland.

Nummi also worked for Schildt & Hallberg’s Tikkurila paint factory, where he led the company’s color service from 1958 to 1975. In this role, he participated in the development of an innovative color mixing system that resulted in the Joker color chart.

Nummi took part in many exhibitions and fairs. At the Milan Triennales in 1954 and 1957, his work was awarded a gold medal. In 1971, Yki Nummi was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal.
